Hijama, also known as wet cupping therapy, is an ancient Islamic healing practice recommended by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Special cups are placed on the skin to create suction, drawing out stagnant blood and toxins from the body. It improves circulation, relieves pain, boosts immunity, and promotes overall well-being. It is one of the best forms of medicine mentioned in the Sunnah.
Yes, Hijama is completely safe when performed by trained and certified specialists using sterile, single-use equipment. At Al Madina Hijama Center, we use fresh disposable blades and cups for every client. All equipment is sterile and never reused, ensuring 100% hygiene and safety.
A standard Hijama session typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the number of cups applied and the areas being treated. The therapist will first assess your condition, apply cups for suction, then make tiny incisions and reapply the cups to draw out blood. For first-time clients, we allow extra time for consultation.
For general health and preventive care, Hijama is recommended 2–3 times per year, ideally on the Sunnah dates. For specific health conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, or high blood pressure, monthly sessions may be recommended. Our specialists will advise you on the frequency based on your individual health needs.
Hijama has been reported to help with a wide range of conditions including: migraines and headaches, back pain and sciatica, high blood pressure, diabetes, fertility issues, skin conditions, anxiety and stress, fatigue, joint pain and arthritis, digestive issues, and general body detoxification. It is a complementary therapy that works alongside conventional medicine.
According to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the best days for Hijama are the 17th, 19th, and 21st of every Islamic (Hijri) month. These dates are scientifically significant as they fall around the full moon when blood flow and pressure are at their peak, making the extraction of stagnant blood most effective.
Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and modern researchers have noted that blood volume and pressure increase around the full moon (13th–15th of the Islamic month). By the 17th, 19th, and 21st, the blood is at its peak level in the capillaries and lymph vessels, making it the optimal time to remove stagnant and toxic blood through Hijama. This maximises the therapeutic benefits of the treatment.
Yes, Hijama can be performed on any day of the year and is still very beneficial. The Sunnah dates are the most recommended for maximum benefit, but if you have a medical condition requiring urgent treatment or cannot attend on those specific dates, Hijama on other days is still effective and widely practised.
According to hadith, the Prophet ﷺ recommended Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday as good days for Hijama. He reportedly said: 'Do cupping on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays' (Ibn Majah). Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are generally considered less favourable. Our Sunnah Dates Calculator on the website can help you find the next best dates.
Al Madina Hijama Center offers a free Sunnah Dates Calculator on our website. It automatically converts today's Gregorian date to the Islamic (Hijri) calendar and shows the upcoming 17th, 19th, and 21st dates in both English and Urdu. Simply visit the website and the calculator is available on the homepage.
Most clients describe Hijama as slightly uncomfortable rather than painful. The suction sensation from the cups can feel like a strong pressure or stretching on the skin, which most people find tolerable. The small incisions made during wet cupping are very superficial (barely skin-deep) and cause minimal discomfort. Many clients find the process relaxing once they get past the initial few minutes. Our therapists work gently and will always check your comfort level throughout the session.
The number of cups used depends on the condition being treated and the areas of the body involved. For a general health session, typically 6–12 cups are applied. For targeted conditions like back pain or migraines, the therapist may use 3–8 cups on specific points. Full-body detox sessions may use up to 20+ cups. Our therapists assess each client individually and determine the appropriate number of cups.
It is recommended to have a light meal 2–3 hours before your Hijama session. Avoid heavy, oily, or spicy food on the day of your treatment. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Do not come fasting — having some food beforehand helps prevent dizziness. Avoid caffeine (tea/coffee) and sugar-heavy drinks on the day of treatment.
After Hijama, please follow these guidelines for the best results: Avoid bathing or showering for at least 6–8 hours. Stay away from cold water, cold air conditioning, and cold food/drinks for 24 hours. Rest and avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Avoid spicy, oily, and heavy food for 24 hours. Do not expose the cupping marks to direct sunlight. Drink plenty of warm water and honey to help flush out toxins.
The circular marks left after Hijama typically fade within 3–10 days. The colour and intensity of the marks indicate the level of stagnation in that area — darker marks suggest more toxin accumulation. These marks are not bruises and are not painful to the touch. With each subsequent session, the marks tend to become lighter as the body detoxifies.
Dry cupping involves only suction — cups are placed on the skin to create a vacuum that pulls the skin upward, improving blood flow. No blood is drawn. Wet cupping (Hijama) involves two stages: first dry cupping for a few minutes, then small superficial incisions are made and the cups are reapplied to draw out a small amount of stagnant, toxic blood. Wet cupping (Hijama) is the practice recommended in the Sunnah and provides deeper detoxification.
The most common Hijama points according to Sunnah are on the upper back (between the shoulder blades), the back of the neck, and behind the ears. For specific conditions, cups are applied to relevant points: lower back for sciatica, head/temples for migraines, knees for joint pain, etc. Our trained therapists follow authentic Sunnah points and modern acupuncture meridian points.

Hijama is generally NOT recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester and last trimester. If you are pregnant, please consult your gynaecologist before considering Hijama. Certain Hijama points can stimulate uterine contractions and must be avoided during pregnancy. Please inform our therapists if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
It is generally advised to avoid Hijama during the menstrual period, as the body is already going through a natural blood-cleansing process. Most scholars and practitioners recommend waiting until after menstruation is complete before having Hijama. If you are unsure, please speak to our therapist for personalised advice.
